The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Kamaraj has devoted his life to the welfare of the people in the state. He served three terms as the Chief Minister and implemented a five-year plan during each tenure.

This led to the growth of several small industries during the first and second five-year plans. Now there was a need to train the people in the various branches of engineering and technology. Kamaraj turned his attention to training the people to meet the requirements of the industries.

Skilled workers were required for various industries. The state promoted education among boys and girls in schools and offered vocational education to willing students. Industrial schools were developed to meet the needs of vocational education.

By the year 1958, there were 53 such schools in the state and one of them was for girls only. The government ran 12 schools while others were run by private management with government aid.

Development in the state

In the Kanyakumari district, 5 private and 2 government industrial schools were set up. Of the remaining 4 were set up in Madras and 1 school each was set up in the South Arcot district, Thanjavur, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore. In industrial schools, students were taught general mechanics, agriculture, woodwork, blacksmithy, tailoring and painting.

The state government established Industrial Training Institutes and the central government established Industrial Training Centres across the state during the second and third five-year plans. Students enrolling in the schools were called trainees and were given certificates on completion of the courses. Industrial Training Institutes were established in 1957 at Cuddalore, Pettati, Nagapattinam and Virudhunagar.

The government set up Industrial Training Institutes in Ambattur industrial estate in 1960. It offered 6 one-year courses and two-year courses and became the biggest institute in the state. With the World Bank’s assistance, a women’s training institute was set up in the same industrial estate in 1962.
