Movies are a means to escape from the real life and live in the reel life for a couple of hours. With growing popularity of cinema a host of movies are coming up every week all across the world. Hence there is growing competition among film producers and actors to reserve the top slots in popularity among the viewers. As a result of this phenomenon the need for film publicity has emerged over the past decades. New and innovative methods of film publicity are being used overwhelmingly to draw more and more audience to the theatres.

Earlier there were fewer movies released worldwide and hence there was no need for much publicity. But in the present era film publicity acquires a pivotal stature in the success of a movie. The film publicity material generally incorporates tools required for press releases, merchandising, advertising campaigns, interviews and media.

The most common form of film publicity material is the movie posters. Posters were used for film promotion since the dawn of the film industry and with the development of print media technology posters have become far more refined and convincing.

Generally a film’s publicity is handled by the exhibitors and distributors. Film publicity or what we might refer as the press junket acts as a cushion for the film makers to cover the financial risk by popularizing their movies and hence covering the production cost well in the first few weeks of a film’s release. Film promotion material also includes merchandising. You might have seen film goodies at your favourite restaurants or apparel stores.

With the introduction of internet and the development in the social media, today the most popularised movie publicity are made through the movie reviews and trailers shown on the websites and TV channels. Today TV channels play a significant role in promoting movies.

Today word of mouth has gained popularity, it speaking about the movie by the movie makers themselves, where the film director, producer actors sit together and discuss about the movie and reach the audience through some TV channels and other social media. Many times the marketing comes from many ways such as festivals and events, search engines and traditional publicity.

Though film makers follow all these marketing techniques, if a movie is informative, influential, emotional, thought provoking and entertaining, it would automatically gain popularity through the audience and would be the choice of the people.
