Different Types Of Materials Used For Li Ion Battery Materials
Lithium ion battery is used in many devices nowadays like laptops, mobiles, iPods, iPhones, etc. It uses advanced technology in which lithium ions are used as a key component to generate power. When the discharge cycle starts, ionization of lithium starts at anode and they are separated from the electrons. The ions reach cathode via electrolyte. These ions are neutralized at cathode. The size of the ions is so small that they can travel through the separator present between anode and cathode. Another feature of lithium is that it can carry high voltage and charge per unit per mass.
Popular li ion battery materials
Many types of electrodes can be made from lithium ion and the popular li ion battery materials used to make cathode is lithium cobalt oxide. Graphite is used for creating anode. There are many other materials used to develop cathode and they include lithium manganese oxide, and lithium phosphate. Ether is used as electrolyte in these batteries.
Development of more materials for li ion battery
Scientists are doing research of developing more materials for li-ion battery. Those materials will act as a substitute for the materials that are currently being used. The substitutes are being developed in order to improve the performance of the battery. One such material is silicon on which research is going on. One feature of this material is that it forms a 3D cage, which has the capacity of absorbing more lithium ions.
Electrolyte is one of the major components and is always in liquid form. They have the task of filling the space between cathode and anode electrodes. Both the electrodes are soaked in the electrolyte. Scientists are also trying to develop solid alternatives. Using solid electrolytes, electrodes can be placed much closer.
